History
HISTORY OF THE OTSEGO FOOD PANTRY
As an outreach ministry to needy families, The First Presbyterian Church, in Grand Rapids started a food pantry on January 23, 1982. Ollie Mock, coordinator, delivered the first basket in March, 1982. A total of thirty-eight baskets were delivered the first year.
On September 8, 1983, Cindy and Mike Fatzinger assumed roles as coordinators of the pantry. The following month the name was changed to the Grand Rapids Pantry to allow greater participation by other churches.
Dorothy Heitzman was coordinator from 1984 until 1995. Sharon Current, along with assistance from her husband Steve and daughter Andrea, was the coordinator from 1995-2015. During those years the pantry's name was changed to the Otsego Food Pantry. In addition to First Presbyterian's support, cash donations and food donations came from other churches and organizations in the Otsego School District. The need for assistance by area families grew faster than expected. Many referrals were made by the Wood County Department of Human Services. In 1986, for instance, thirty-eight families were served, compared to the six hundred twenty-three persons who received aid in 1997. Over the years the pantry helped families with food, gasoline and other social needs.
Lisa Hatfield took over as Director of the Food Pantry in 2016. A mission statement was created in the early years, “Serving healthier food to those in need”, and the focus was directed to food only. For other social service needs, volunteers refer those in need to other programs already in existence in the community.
For 42 years the Otsego Food Pantry has operated in the First Presbyterian Church, under the umbrella of the church. The Pantry has relied on donations from private individuals and other churches and community organizations. The Otsego Food Pantry received 501(c)(3) status on March 21, 2024 to help sustain their mission. The Pantry will continue to be housed in the First Presbyterian Church, in Grand Rapids, OH, but will operate under the guidelines of 501(c)(3) rules and regulations. The Mission Statement remains the same “Serving healthier food to those in need.”
